How the Sam Vokes deal collapsed

Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Sam Vokes was supposed to go on a season long loan to Derby County, but the move collapsed on transfer deadline day. Now Wolves chairman Jez Moxey has revealed the real reasons for the deal not going through.

Mr.Moxey, while speaking to the Birmingham Mail, said that the Rams had agreed a deal to bring Vokes on loan to Pride Park as a replacement for the departing Rob Hulse, who was supposed to go to Middlesbrough.

However Hulse’s move did not go through, and Derby pulled the plug on the Vokes deal at the last minute, saying that they could not guarantee the striker first team football. Continue reading “How the Sam Vokes deal collapsed”

Bolton Wanderers sign Ricketts and Knight

Bolton Wanderers have completed the double signing of defenders Sam Ricketts and Zat Knight from Hull City and Aston Villa respectively. The duo are Trotters boss Gary Megson’s third and fourth signing of the summer transfer window after Pompey’s Sean Davis and WBA’s Paul Robinson.

Welsh international Ricketts started in 27 of Hull’s Premier League games last season. Knight was a less regular starter for Villa, as he had competition in the now retired Martin Laursen, Carlos Cuellar and Curtis Davies.

St.Mirren sign Mo Camara

Scottish Premier League side St.Mirren have snapped up full back Mohammed Camara on a free transfer. The Guinean left back, 33, has signed a short term deal till the end of the season, with an option to extend it by another year.

Camara is best known in England for his spells with Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers, although he has also enjoyed smaller stints at Celtic, Derby County, Norwich and Blackpool. He was a free agent after being released by new manager Derby boss Nigel Clough earlier this month.

St.Mirren were initially supposed to sign Ian Harte, but the former Leeds left back dramatically turned down a move to Paisley after agreeing terms.

Agger- the ball is in Liverpool’s court

Liverpool centre back Daniel Agger has admitted that he has “no idea” whether the club want him to sign a new deal. The Danish defender’s contract expires next summer but the club are yet to tie him down to a long term deal.

Agger has attracted attention from both AC Milan and Real Madrid, but manager Rafa Benitez insists that he has a long term future at Anfield. Agger moved to Liverpool in January 2006 on a four and a half year contract from Brondby for £5.8m. Benitez has also hit out at his bosses for their failure to give Agger a new contract.

Agger has also had limited starts at Anfield since the arrival of Slovakian centre half Martin Skrtel. Benitez has four central defenders to choose from- Agger, Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyypia and Skrtel. Injuries have not helped Agger’s cause either. The Dane also reportedly wants a higher salary than what the Reds are prepared to offer him.

Football Boots trivia

Some interesting trivia I found on the net today.

We all know who Dimitar Berbatov is. But do you know what fee did CSKA Sofia pay FC Pirin to acquire Berbatov in the late 1990’s?

It was not the £30m that United paid for him. Not even £100K.

Sofia paid the pricely sum of 50 footballs and 20 pairs of boots to Pirin.

India qualified for the 1950 World Cup ( The same one in which Uruguay upset Brazil to take home the trophy), but did not compete in it. But they wanted to play barefoot in the tournament, which was unacceptable to FIFA, and therefore they were not allowed to take part in the tournament. Continue reading “Football Boots trivia”

Bradford City sign Rehman on loan

Bradford City have signed QPR defender Zesh Rehman on loan till the end of the season. The central defender is expected to figure in the starting eleven against Bury tomorrow.

Rehman had recently returned from a loan spell at Blackpool. He did not get too many opportunities to impress at Bloomfield Road.

The Pakistan international captain was the first player of Asian origin to play in the Premiership, when he played for Fulham against Liverpool in April 2004.

Stuart McCall has obviously signed Rehman with a view to tightening his defence, which has been leaking goals left and right this season. Rehman will probably replace Matt Clarke, who has made a number of defensive errors this season.
