Wheater’s contract was due to expire in the summer, and the extension ensures that he will stay at Boro for the foreseeable future. The defender, who was born on Valentine’s Day, has been one of Boro’s more consistent players this season.

Wheater has represented England at the U-21 level and has been tipped by Fabio Capello as a future Three Lions star.
